This kid can hit — Alec Bohm wins Phillies another game with walk-off

The Phillies continue to give away leads and rally for wins. They did it Monday in New York and now they've done it Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Rookie Alec Bohm capped a big day at the plate with a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Phillies to a 6-5 win over the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

Earlier in the game, Bohm had a two-run single in the third inning to give the Phillies a 4-1 lead.

Phillies pitching failed to protect that lead, but the team rallied for the win to improve to 21-17. The Phils are 12-3 in their last 15 games.

Phillies pitchers were tagged for four solo home runs.

Reliever Tommy Hunter gave up two runs in the sixth as the Red Sox took a one-run lead. Hunter had little room for error after starter Zach Eflin gave up a pair of homers in the fifth as the Red Sox turned the Phillies' three-run lead into a one-run lead.

Phillies starters have allowed the opposition to cut into leads the last two days. Zack Wheeler was ahead 6-0 before allowing three runs in the fifth at New York on Monday. The Mets eventually went ahead in the game, but the Phillies rallied for a 9-8 win.

Bohm's seventh-inning hit bailed out the pitching staff in this one. Bohm drove in four of the Phillies' six runs. His game-winning hit came against Matt Barnes after J.T. Realmuto walked and Didi Gregorius singled.

Eflin's day

Eflin went five innings and left with a one-run lead. He gave up eight hits, three of which were solo homers, walked one and struck out six.

Left-handed hitters continue to give Eflin fits. All three of the homers he gave up were to left-handed hitters, including back-to-back shots in the fifth. Those two homers turned what was a three-run Phillies lead into a one-run lead.

Entering the game, right-handed batters were hitting .191 with a .526 OPS against Eflin and left-handed hitters were hitting .339/1.019.

Eflin has allowed seven homers in 37⅓ innings, six to left-handed hitters.

Hunter's run ends

Joe Girardi went to his hottest reliever to protect a one-run lead in the sixth, but Hunter couldn't get the job done. He gave up a game-tying homer with one out to Bobby Dalbec then hit a batter with two outs. That opened the door for Rafael Devers to launch an RBI double off the right-field wall, just above Bryce Harper's leap, putting Boston ahead by a run. Devers also homered twice.

Hunter took an eight-inning scoreless streak into the game.

Big hit for Bohm

The Phillies capitalized on some Boston sloppiness — a mental mistake, an error, a wild pitch and three walks — in rallying for three runs to break a 1-1 tie in the third.

Bohm had the only hit in the inning and it was an important one — a two-out, two-run single up the middle on a full-count pitch. It was a nice bit of two-strike hitting and it gave the Phils a 4-1 lead that they ultimately could not lock down.

Bohm had a huge, game-tying single in the eighth inning of Monday's 9-8 win against the Mets.

Gregorius homered for the Phillies' first run of the day.

Harper's struggles

Slumping Harper went 0 for 3 with a walk. He is hitting .158 (9 for 57) over his last 18 games. He is riding a 14-game home run drought.

Harper's struggles appear to be wearing on him. He grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the fourth inning and jogged to first base. He then spent what seemed to be a reflective moment taking off his batting gloves and heading out to his position.

Harper came up in a big situation in the bottom of the sixth — two outs, two men on and the Phils down a run. He popped up to center field against right-hander Ryan Brasier.

Roster additions

The teams were allowed to add an extra player for the doubleheader. The Phillies added left-handed reliever Garrett Cleavinger. The Red Sox added catcher Deivy Grullon, a former Phillie.

Grullon hit 42 homers and drove in 136 runs at Double A and Triple A over the last two seasons and appeared in four games with the big club last season. The Phillies designated Grullon for assignment when they needed roster spots last week and Boston claimed him off waivers.

Grullon made his Red Sox debut behind the plate in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
