Sixers assistant coach Kevin Young is leaving the team to join the Phoenix Suns, a source confirmed Friday to NBC Sports Philadelphia. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news.
Young, one of the top assistants on Brett Brown’s coaching staff, is moving on after Brown was fired. He served as the head coach of the Sixers’ G-League affiliate, then known as the Delaware 87ers, before joining Brown’s staff in 2016. Suns head coach Monty Williams and Young were both Sixers assistants during the 2018-19 season.
Part of Young’s role was helping to install and tweak elements of the Sixers’ base, “A to B” offense.

The three other front-of-the-bench assistants for Brown were Ime Udoka, who has been linked to several head coaching openings, Joseph Blair and John Bryant.
Doc Rivers was officially introduced as Brown’s replacement on Monday and is expected to bring in a new staff. Alvin Gentry was under consideration, Wojnarowski had reported, but instead decided to join the Kings.
The outcomes of the remaining head coaching searches could impact potential Sixers hires. Tyronn Lue and Sam Cassell, assistants under Rivers in 2019-20, are both candidates for open positions. Another name that might be worth monitoring is Rex Kalamian, who was in charge of the Clippers’ defense.
