2017 NFL draft prospect watch: Playmakers for the Eagles

Thanks to the Sam Bradford trade, the Eagles will have a first-round pick in next year's NFL draft, which will be held in their own backyard.

With the college season underway, we look at prospects who could help the Eagles out. This week, the focus is on something the Birds desperately need: playmakers.

Christian McCaffrey, Stanford, junior, RB, 6-0/200
The Heisman Trophy runner-up last season appears to be picking up right where he left off. He carried the ball 22 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns in Stanford's 26-13 victory over Kansas State. He added seven catches for 40 yards. He also had an absurd kick return that was called back.

This running back class is loaded with talent. We'll likely see the highest number of running backs taken in the first round in a long time. McCaffrey would be an ideal fit for Doug Pederson's offense. He's an excellent pass-catcher out of the backfield and is explosive with the ball in his hands.

Wayne Gallman, Clemson, junior, RB, 6-0/210
With so many talented backs, Gallman may not be the most hyped, but he can play. He's not as bruising as some of the others, but he can handle a heavy workload. After carrying the ball 283 times during his sophomore campaign, he had 30 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown in Clemson's 19-13 win at Auburn.

He also has decent hands, hauling in 45 passes during his first two seasons for the Tigers.

Mike Williams, Clemson, redshirt junior, WR, 6-2/225
A serious neck injury cost Williams pretty much all of his junior season (he received a medical redshirt). He showed he's 100 percent by catching nine passes for 174 yards in Clemson's victory over Auburn. All Williams has to do is stay healthy and he will be one of the first receivers off the board come April. He has great size, speed and hands. He'd look awfully good catching passes from Carson Wentz.

Nick Chubb, Georgia, junior, RB, 5-10/228
Chubb is also coming off an injury. Much like his predecessor, Todd Gurley, Chubb is showing no ill effects from an ugly knee injury. Chubb went for 222 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries in Georgia's opening win over North Carolina. Chubb, who had a monster freshman year filling in for Gurley, has averaged 7.1 yards per carry during his college career.

Royce Freeman, Oregon, junior, RB, 5-11/230
Freeman is only 20 years old, but he's a grown man at 5-foot-11 and 230 pounds. He's had a massive workload during his time at Oregon with 535 carries during his first two years. During a blowout of UC Davis, Freeman had just 11 carries but recorded 87 yards and two touchdowns. Don't let the size fool you, Freeman has some speed and decent hands. He caught 26 passes for 348 yards last season.

Darren Carrington II, Oregon, redshirt junior, WR, 6-2/195
Carrington's numbers won't necessarily blow you away because of Oregon's tendency to spread the ball around, but he's averaged 19 yards per catch during his college career. He's explosive and has great size. He caught seven passes for 117 yards and touchdown in the Ducks' opener.

He does come with some baggage, having been suspended multiple games for marijuana use (including the 2015 National Championship). The Eagles showed in this year's draft that they won't shy away from players with character concerns.
