Claude Giroux suffered a right index finger injury that required surgery on Thursday and will need 5-6 weeks recovery.
Giroux was preparing for Friday’s Ottawa Sun Scramble golf event when his club shattered, necessitating surgery. He will miss the start of training camp.
Sun sponsors were told on Thursday night that Giroux was forced to pull out because of a wrist injury suffered earlier in the day.
LeDroitca d'Ottawa/Gatinea reported Giroux sliced four tendons -- not one. It also stated that the operation repaired all four, although none were completely severed.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren released this statement:
"Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux had successful surgery this afternoon on his right index finger performed by Dr. Katherine Boyd at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada. Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger. Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger. He is expected to have a full recovery in 5-6 weeks."
Any surgery this late into the summer would obviously affect Giroux’s status for a successful start of the season. Suddenly, the acquisition of Vinny Lecavalier as another center comes into immediate focus for the Flyers.
Giroux underwent dual wrist surgery in the summer of 2012, as well, following slashes incurred during the Flyers' playoff series against the Penguins that previous spring. He was the Flyers' leading scorer last season with 48 points.
