The Redskins led the Eagles 7-6 in their 1990 wild-card playoff game at the Vet and were driving deep in Eagles territory when Redskins QB Mark Rypien connected on a short pass with running back Earnest Byner. Eagles safety Ben Smith flipped Byner in the air at the 6-yard-line, the ball came loose, Smith picked it up and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown. But the replay official ruled — incorrectly — that Byner was down by contact, the TD was nullified and the Redskins went on to kick a field goal on the way to a 20-6 win. Ryan was fired the next day.

It was just last month that Jourdan Lewis of the Cowboys fumbled the opening kickoff of the crucial Eagles-Cowboys showdown at AT&T Stadium at the 18-yard-line. Kamu Grugier-Hill came out of an all-Eagles pileup with the ball, but because the replay official couldn’t tell conclusively which Eagle recovered — although it had to be an Eagle, because there were no Cowboys in the vicinity — he gave the ball back to the Cowboys. They wound up winning in overtime. If the correct ruling was made? The Eagles probably win the game and the NFC East.

Early in the second quarter, before the fog rolled in during the Eagles-Bears 1988 playoff game at Soldier Field, the Eagles faced a ridiculous 3rd-and-32, thanks to a Sean Smith sack, a Dave Rimington holding call and an Anthony Toney two-yard loss. But Randall Cunningham threw to rarely used Ron Johnson, who only caught 19 passes all year, and Johnson was tackled as he clearly crossed the sticks by Bears corner Vestee Jackson. But the officials didn’t give the Eagles the first down, and Dante Jones stuffed Cunningham on 4th-and-1. The fog came in just before halftime and the Bears won 20-12.

One of the most ridiculous personal fouls ever called against an Eagles player came in 2010, when Trent Cole sacked Peyton Manning late in the fourth quarter on a 4th-and-18 with the Eagles leading the Colts 26-17 at the Linc. Cole’s right hand barely grazed the back of Manning’s helmet to the extent Manning likely didn’t even feel anything. But the refs called a personal foul, and instead of Eagles ball with a nine-point lead near midfield with 3 ½ minutes left, the Colts went in and scored. Asante Samuel’s interception ended the drama a little later, but the penalty remains one of the most ridiculous ever called against the Eagles.

If it happened today? It would have been pass interference on Rod Hood. But 10 years ago, in the 2008 NFC Championship Game, it wasn’t called. The Eagles, trailing the Cards 32-25 with two minutes left in Glendale, Ariz., and had a 4th-and-10 just inside midfield. Donovan McNabb threw to Kevin Curtis, who was basically tackled by former Eagle cornerback Rod Hood at the 30-yard-line near the right sideline. No flag and the Cards were able to run out all but the final couple seconds of the game to advance to the Super Bowl.

The Saints led the Eagles 27-24 with 3 ½ minutes left in their 2006 playoff game at the Superdome and were running out the clock when Drew Brees fumbled, Darren Howard recovered and the Eagles had new life. After the two-minute warning, the Eagles had a 4th-and-10 near midfield and Andy Reid decided to go for it. Jeff Garcia completed a pass past the sticks to Hank Baskett to keep the drive alive, but the gain was negated by a very borderline false start called on right guard Scott Young, who had replaced injured Shawn Andrews. Reid decided to punt and the Saints ran out the clock.

The Eagles only trailed the Raiders 7-0 in the first quarter of Super Bowl XV at the Superdome when Ron Jaworski found Rodney Parker for a 40-yard touchdown that should have tied the game at 7-all. But Harold Carmichael was tagged with a dubious illegal motion penalty that negated the touchdown. The Eagles punted two plays later, and three plays after that Jim Plunkett connected with Kenny King on an 80-yard TD pass that made it 14-0 on the way to the Raiders’ 27-10 win. The Eagles didn’t score a touchdown until they trailed by 21 points in the fourth quarter. Without the penalty on Carmichael? It all could have been very different.

The Panthers led the Eagles 7-0 early in the 2003 NFC Championship Game at the Linc, but the Eagles were driving with a 1st-and-10 inside the Panthers’ 25-yard-line when Donovan McNabb was sacked by defensive end Mike Rucker. Moments after the play was over, Panthers linebacker Greg Favors came flying in and landed right on a defenseless McNabb, who suffered torn rib cartilage on the play. No flag. McNabb was never the same after that and was eventually replaced by Koy Detmer, and the Panthers advanced to the Super Bowl with an ugly 14-3 win.

The Texans hit Michael Vick late so many times during the Eagles 34-24 win at the Linc in 2010 that Andy Reid — who rarely said anything of substance in interviews — blasted the refs the next day during his Monday press conference, saying that Vick had been repeatedly victim of late hits both Sunday and throughout the season without flags. The worst of several terrible no-calls in the Texans game came in the third quarter when he was hit very late and slammed to the turf by linebacker Brian Cushing on a play when he was picked off by Jason Allen.

Nick Foles never yells at the refs, but after a ridiculous no-call when everybody in the stadium saw him violently face-masked down to the turf by Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney during a two-point conversion attempt, even Foles lost his cool. It was the second quarter of the Eagles-Texans game at the Linc this past December. Clowney was called for a late hit on Foles later in the game and fined $40,110, but the face-mask may have been more egregious. The Clowney personal foul did contribute to the Eagles’ last-minute game-winning drive in a game they had to win to make the playoffs.
