FAR HILLS, N.J. -- Congressional Country Club will not host the U.S. Amateur in 2009 because of course conditions that need improvement ahead of the 2011 U.S. Open.
Southern Hills will host the ’09 U.S. Amateur, one year earlier than scheduled, the USGA said Friday. The USGA has not announced where the U.S. Amateur will be played in 2010.
The USGA said severe weather last month in the mid-Atlanta region caused problems at Congressional, located in Bethesda, Md. Officials decided Congressional should not host the U.S. Amateur to give it more time to make changes in advance of the U.S. Open.
‘In this way, the players at both the 2009 U.S. Amateur and the 2011 U.S. Open will have the kind of playing conditions that are the hallmark of USGA championships,’ said Jim Hyler, chairman of the USGA championship committee.
Congressional, which last held the U.S. Open in 1997, became the home this year of Tiger Woods’ new PGA Tour event, the AT&T National. It will return to Congressional in 2008, and it was not clear if losing the U.S. Amateur means that Woods’ tournament will be allowed to return a third straight year.
Southern Hills, located in Tulsa, Okla., hosted the PGA Championship last month, and Woods won his 13th career major.
