Garry Hanchera, Gene Jones’ caddie at this week’s Champions Tour Q-School, collapsed during the final round on Friday and died at a local hospital from an apparent heart attack.
Jones was playing the 15th hole at TPC Scottsdale (Ariz.) when Hanchera collapsed and Mike Goodes, who was paired with Jones, administered CPR.
Members of the TPC Scottsdale staff were unable to revive Hanchera with a defibrillator before he was taken to HonorHealth Scottsdale Hospital via an ambulance.
“We were saddened to hear of [Hanchera’s] passing, and ask that you keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” said Greg McLaughlin, the president of the Champions Tour.
Final-round play was suspended after Hanchera collapsed for approximately 35 minutes until he was taken to the hospital.
Jones finished tied for 20th following a closing 70.
Hanchera is survived by his girlfriend, Trudy Brown, and brother, Doyle. He was 64.
