DORAL, Fla. – Although he got off to a late start, it’s been a mixed year for Sergio Garcia.
After missing the cut at the Northern Trust Open, his first start on the PGA Tour in 2016, the Spaniard came up one stroke short last week at the Honda Classic to Adam Scott.
“As soon as I shook hands with Adam, it was over. No, it was fine,” Garcia said of last week’s near miss. “I was coming off a terrible week at Riviera, which is a place I really, really enjoy and I was very disappointed with that.
“I went to another week that I really enjoy [Honda Classic] with a great golf course and I played really well, and I hang in there without feeling great with my swing and everything, and I almost won.”

It’s been a similar story this week at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, where he started with rounds of 73-71 but rebounded on Saturday with a 5-under 67 that included just one bogey and was tied for the low round of the day.
Garcia was tied for seventh when he finished his round and confident that increasingly difficult conditions could give him a chance on Sunday.
“There’s still a lot of golf to be played out there. If they don’t go too crazy, we may have a little chance tomorrow,” he said.
