Phil Mickelson will play in the 2016-17 season-opening Safeway Open at Silverado, tournament officials announced this week.
It’ll mark Mickelson’s first appearance in Napa, Calif. He hasn’t played in October in the U.S. since the Fry’s Electronics Open in Scottsdale in 2007.
In 2013, Mickelson played both the CIMB Classic and WGC-HSBC Champions in the fall, but he made his debut at the CareerBuilder Challenge in January each of the past two seasons.
“I look forward to playing in the first Safeway Open,” he said in a release. “Amy and I love going to Napa, and now we have an even better reason to spend a week with the players and their wives.”
Tour rookie Emiliano Grillo won last fall at what was then known as the Frys.com Open. Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose were also in the field.
