NEW YORK – On Aug. 13 when Tiger Woods withdrew his name from consideration for one of Tom Watson’s potential captain’s picks many believed it was the former world No. 1 who had reached out to the PGA of America with the news.
But on Tuesday during the announcement of his three picks Watson clarified how he learned that Woods would not be playing for the U.S. team this year.
“Tiger told me when I called Tiger. He didn’t call me. I called him,” Watson said.
At the time, a statement released on Woods’ web site was unclear who reached out to whom.
“I have already spoken to Tom [Watson] about the Ryder Cup, and while I greatly appreciate his thinking about me for a possible captain’s pick, I took myself out of consideration,” Woods said.
Woods, who had back surgery on March 31, was told by his doctors that his ailing back needed more time to heal and he doesn’t plan to play again until his own World Challenge in December.
