SAN DIEGO – The public remains fascinated by Tiger Woods’ pursuit of 18 majors, and for good reason: One of the world’s biggest stars is chasing arguably the most hallowed record in sports.
But there’s another significant milestone that he’s soon approaching: 82, as in the most PGA Tour wins.
Entering this week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines – where he has won eight times in his career – Woods sits at 79 PGA Tour titles, just three shy of Sam Snead’s all-time record.

“Will Tiger pass Jack?” is a question that might not be answered for another decade. Woods’ supplanting of Snead, meanwhile, seems to be a matter of when, not if.
“Does it get overshadowed? I think it does, yeah,” Woods said Wednesday. “Everyone wants to talk about the majors you’ve won, just like, for instance, everyone wants to talk about how many slams (Roger Federer) has won. People don’t realize how many tournaments you’ve won or whether it’s Fed or Jimmy Connors who won the most events. That’s something that gets overlooked as consistency over a long period of time.
“Sam won into his 50s. To be able to do it for virtually 30 years, that’s unbelievable to have a playing career that long. For me to do it in, so far, under 20 years is something I’m proud of.”
