FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – With this U.S. Open to be decided on a soggy track with rain forecast through the week, it looks like it will take a mudder to win.
So who do you like?
How about Angel Cabrera? He is, after all, nicknamed “El Pato,” which translates as “The Duck.”
Vijay Singh’s chances also look better. Remember, he was once a club pro in Borneo, which is in the middle of a rain forest.
You’ve still got to like Tiger Woods. As the stories go, he impressed teammates at Stanford because he would go to the range when it looked like rain was coming so he could learn to play better in poor weather conditions.
Despite a shaky start, don’t discount Padraig Harrington either. You can’t grow up in Ireland without learning to battle the elements. His two British Open titles are testament to that.
Steve Stricker works himself into this conversation based on the theory of PGA Tour Radio’s Mark Carnevale, who says he likes the most even-tempered guys when the weather gets bad, because emotional guys tend to struggle more with all the frustrations that bad weather brings.
