The European Tour announced Wednesday that the Andalucia Masters, scheduled for Oct. 18-21 at Valderrama Golf Club, has been canceled due to Spain’s financial crisis.
George O’Grady, the chief executive of the European Tour, said in a release: “This is extremely disappointing news to receive, especially at such a late date.”
It is the fourth tournament in Spain that has been canceled this year, following the Madrid Open, the Castellon Masters and the Iberdrola Open.
According to Sky Sports, O’Grady said that a lack of finances and change in political leadership in the area forced the cancelation.
“It’s common knowledge the problem the Eurozone countries are in but this is a political decision as well,” O’Grady said, according to the report. “There’s been lots of changes in the local politicians and the parties involved. … We always thought this one would be rescued. We were prepared to go the extra mile with our own money, but you can’t do it if people won’t talk back the other way.”
Sergio Garcia was the defending champion of the event.
