AUGUSTA, Ga. – Charl Schwartzel is proving to be a quick Augusta National study. In just his second Masters the South African is among the leaders following a second-round 71 that left him at 4 under and four behind co-leaders K.J. Choi and Alvaro Quiros.
Or maybe he just had a good teacher.
During Ernie Els’s charity tournament in south Florida last year Jack Nicklaus offered an impromptu tutorial on how to play the venerable course and Schwartzel went on to tie for 30th in his first outing.
“He took me through almost every single hole. It’s hard to get much better advice than that,” Schwartzel said. “But you’ve got to get the experience for yourself and that will take a couple of years.”
“Shag Bag” would like to humbly suggest the Golden Bear consider penning a “how to play” book on Augusta National. It would sell at least 99 copies.
