Here’s a quintessential Harrington quote from the WGC-HSBC Champions about the wide open nature of the battle for No. 1: “It may seem strange, but now that I am 19th in the world I am actually closer to being No. 1 than when I was ranked No 3.”
Harrington eloquently put into perspective how far everyone was from catching Tiger Woods in world-ranking points with Woods at the height of his powers.
Today, Harrington’s 19th in the world with an Official World Golf Ranking average that trails No. 1 Lee Westwood by 4.29 points. Harrington roughly estimates he needs four wins to overtake Westwood at the top of the rankings.
After Harrington won the British Open in 2008, he climbed to No. 3 but he trailed Woods by 13.22 average points. Harrington said he would have needed about 12 wins to overtake Woods back then.
