ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Phil Mickelson missed a short birdie putt on the 72nd hole of the Open Championship, which was apropos because of the way the week went.
Lefty was genuinely pleased to play at the Old Course earlier in the week. His record at this championship is easily the worst of any of the four majors – only one top-10 finish – but he felt that the Old Course was the cure for what ailed his links golf woes.
It was not. Mickelson shot 73-71-70-75 for a 1-over-par total. His final-round 75 was his worst score of the week in what were clearly the easiest conditions he faced. Mickelson made birdie in two of his first five holes but played the final seven holes in 4 over, including a double bogey on No. 16.
