Not-so-sweet 16th

SOUTHHAMPTON, Bermuda – Last year on his way to victory at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, Lucas Glover said of the par-3 16th hole at Port Royal Golf Club, “Man, I’ve never been so nervous on a shot.”

Thanks to favorable onshore winds on Tuesday the Grand Slam fourball didn’t feel the same fear. “Today was great,” smiled Ernie Els, who trails David Toms by a shot after carding a 3-under 68 in the 36-hole event.

That doesn’t mean, however, that the hole has been reduced to a pushover.

“I hit 6-iron today. During the pro-am I hit 5-wood,” Els said. “It could be the toughest hole I’ve ever played in my life. Along with the 16th at Cypress Point, I think it’s the toughest.”

Take that No. 17 at TPC Sawgrass.
