AKRON, Ohio – The best Anthony Kim could say of his Sunday round at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is that it wasn’t as bad as playing companion Tiger Woods’, but not by much.
Kim, playing his first event since going on the DL in May for thumb surgery, shot a final-round 76 to edge Woods by one stroke and finish at 16-over 296. Not exactly what he expected but he was much more upbeat than his high-profile playing partner following his morning 18.
“The thumb is good,” Kim said. “I’m pretty sure today is the worst it’s been, but it will be fine.”
Kim, who had to limit his practice on Tuesday to eight holes to have an MRI on his left thumb, said he planned to travel to Whistling Straits, site of next week’s PGA Championship, on Sunday to work on his chipping and his putting.
“That’s what has been hurting me,” he said.
