HUMBLE, Texas -- The rain continued Sunday at a saturated Redstone Golf Club leading to the suspension of the third round of the Houston Open.
‘Well, we wanted to play golf all day, but it finally got to a point late in the afternoon where the golf course - the fairways just were under water,’ said PGA Tour tournament director Mark Russell. ‘It was going to take several hours for them to drain.’
Players will return to the course Monday morning at 8:00 a.m local time to resume the third round. The final round is scheduled to begin at 8:40 a.m. with players remaining in the same groups as their third-round pairings.
‘We’ll play off two tees tomorrow. We’re not going to re-pair,’ Russell said. ‘We’ll send them right back out and hopefully we’ll finish by 3:30 and get a winner here and get the players wherever they’re going.’
The Golf Channel will carry live coverage of the final round, beginning at 2:30 p.m ET.
The last time a tournament held a complete final round on a Monday on the PGA Tour was last year at the FBR Open.
There was some golf played Sunday morning with 2002 Houston Open champion Vijay Singh climbing into a share of the lead.
‘It’s hard to be in the locker room and just hang around there,’ said Singh. ‘I just can’t get too relaxed and then I have to start all over again. My mind is set to play, so I’m just waiting.’
Last year’s money leader stands at 7 under par through 12 holes. John Huston and Joe Ogilvie are also at minus-7 through 15 holes.
Geoff Ogilvy and Jose Coceres are each through 14 holes at 6 under par.
