Semple Thompson Lead Womens Sr Am

RYE, N.Y. -- Carol Semple Thompson, a seven-time USGA winner, is 2-under par through 16 holes on Saturday and in the lead during the suspended first round of stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur Championship.

Two long weather stoppages wreaked havoc on the opening round. During the second delay, officials decided to suspend play for the day, with half of the field in the clubhouse.

The first round will resume at 7:45 a.m. (ET) Sunday morning with the second round scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

Karen Richardson is in the lead in the clubhouse at 2-over-par 74 at the Apawamis Club.

Semple Thompson, a four-time winner of this championship, mixed four birdies and two bogeys. Her veteran experience allowed her not to get frazzled with so much down time.

‘I’ve done it enough that I am able to keep my focus so it wasn’t that bad,’ said Semple Thompson. ‘I am still driven to do well. I have a new putting stroke which seems to be helping.’

Ginny Burkey, who played with Semple Thompson on Saturday, is even-par through 16 holes and alone in second. Toni Wiesner, Lida Tingley and Diane Lang are knotted in third place at plus-one through nine holes.

Defending champion Carolyn Creekmore struggled badly in the opening round. She shot an 11-over-par 83.

‘I just wasn’t consistent today. Well, yes I was. I was consistently bad,’ admitted Creekmore. ‘I’d hit a good drive, then I’d hit it in the water. If I play well tomorrow, I still have a chance.’

There will be two rounds of stroke play, then the field will be whittled down to 64. From there is the match-play portion to determine the champion.
