HOLYWOOD, Northern Ireland – This quiet suburb of Belfast has been anything but since native son Rory McIlroy won last month’s U.S. Open.
High Street is lined with an eclectic mix of shops, all adorned with signs and posters celebrating the 22-year-old’s breakthrough victory.
At Skinner’s, a small bakery framed by a barber and flower shop, cupcakes adorned with McIlroy’s likeness have been hot items. Although the shop stopped selling the specialty item last week, awaiting a special order late Saturday afternoon.
‘We’ve sold thousands of them, maybe more,’ the woman behind the counter said.
