GolfChannel.com Senior Writer Jason Sobel is in San Francisco, CA this week for the 112th U.S. Open Championship. He followed Tiger Woods and the world’s top 3 during the first round of the U.S. Open and he likens Tiger in the first round of a Major to a prize fighter who is not trying to deliver a knockout punch but instead get a feel for his opponent. Tiger was getting a feel for the course and was putting himself in position on Thursday.
He ranked the 156 players in the field on GolfChannel.com and said that he would move Tiger Woods up from the initial rank of 3rd and would also move up players like Justin Rose and Ian Poulter from their initial ranks.
He walked with Donald, McIlroy, and Westwood over their last 12 holes on Thursday and the round had a feel of a death march as they started off badly and just continued to play poorly as the round went on. Sobel said that he figures no one would have thought that those three players would combine to shoot 19 over par in the first round and give countless shots to the rest of the field.
