Bob Knight will be making a return to Indiana this week, only not in the way that many of the Hoosier faithful would have hoped.
The General will be attending a rally for Donald Trump in Indianapolis.
“By the way, would I like to get Coach Bobby Knight, who is a great coach, his endorsement,” Trump told supporters at a rally in Waterbury, Conn., on Saturday, according to The Hill. “Tough, strong, smart. I would like to get that for Indiana, I’ll tell you what. To me, that would be a great endorsement.”
And he got it.
Trump sent out a press release on Monday saying that he would be joined by “special guest, the legendary coach, Bobby Knight.”
Knight, who no longer lives in the state of Indiana, has not been back to IU’s Bloomington campus since he was fired by the University back in 2000. Knight had been given a “zero-tolerance policy” regarding his conduct after a video surfaced of the coach choking a player named Neil Reed in practice. Six months after that policy was enacted, in September of 2000, Knight grabbed the arm of a student, lecturing him after he referred to the coach as “Knight” and not “Coach Knight”.
While Knight has not returned to Indiana, he did make an appearance at a Fish Fry on Purdue’s campus -- Indiana’s archi-rival -- in February, just weeks after he refused to show up at a celebration for his undefeated 1976 national title team.
