The NCAA has granted Notre Dame forward Scott Martin a sixth year of eligibility, allowing him to return for the 2012-13 season, the school announced in a statement Friday night.
“We’re thrilled in the NCAA’s decision to grant Scott a sixth year of eligibility,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said in the release.
“Scott was our ‘glue guy’ this past season with our young team. He helped drive us with his experience and leadership. Scott is a great example for college basketball and we’re excited that he gets an opportunity to play one more season in a Notre Dame uniform.”
Martin averaged 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season for the Irish, with his biggest game of the year coming in an early-season win over Delaware State, when he had 23 points.
His Notre Dame teammate, Tim Abromaitis, was recently denied a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, after missing all but two games of the 2011-12 season with a torn ACL.
Martin played his freshman season at Purdue, before transferring to Notre Dame. After having sat out a season due to NCAA transfer rules, he tore his ACL in a preseason workout and missed the entire 2009-10 season.
He graduated from Notre Dame in December of 2011 and is now working toward a graduate degree.
The Irish finished 22-12 overall this past season, including 13-5 in the Big East. They lost in the Round of 64 of the NCAA tournament to Xavier, ending their season.
