Avalanche slide back into being top pickups

Brandon Saad

Brandon Saad

Jeff Le-USA TODAY Sports

If Carolina forward Jordan Staal (33%) or Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger (25%) are available then they are worth adding. Staal has been red hot for the Hurricanes, while Oettinger has performed well between the pipes for the Stars and the team has a busy upcoming schedule. Buffalo netminder Linus Ullmark (29%) is also worthy of your consideration if you need goaltending assistance.

Jack Roslovic went from being rostered in just 5% of Yahoo leagues last week when he appeared on Waiver Wired to 43%. Mike Smith skyrocketed from 6% to 38% over the course of the week, while Alec Martinez went from 28% to 50%.

Let’s get into this week’s suggestions:

Chandler Stephenson (Vegas) - C, LW - Rostered in 22% of Yahoo leagues

Stephenson, who already jumped from 13% last night to 22% this morning, has heated up with four goals and two assists in the past four games. He has produced a multi-point performance in three of those contests. Stephenson went five straight matches without a point prior to this recent hot stretch. He continues to play between Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone at even strength, so it was only a matter of time before he started to pick up points. Vegas only has two games scheduled for this week, but he could be worthy of more than a flier if he starts to produce with some regularity.

Brandon Saad (Colorado) - LW, RW - Rostered in 19% of Yahoo leagues

Saad was heating up before the Avalanche were forced to pause play because of COVID-19 protocols. He had four goals and three assists in five outings prior to the team’s shutdown. His 33.3 shooting percentage is not something that will last, but he still has plenty of fantasy appeal as a top-six forward on Colorado. Saad is poised to play with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen when the team returns. He has been practicing on the top line in the absence of Gabriel Landeskog, who is sidelined due to COVID protocol. Once Landeskog returns. Saad will probably return to playing alongside Nazem Kadri and Andre Burakovsky.

Jordan Eberle (NY Islanders) - RW - Rostered in 16% of Yahoo leagues

Eberle has supplied three goals and one assist in four games thanks to two multi-point performances. He has 15 shots on target during that stretch. Eberle is tied for first on the Islanders with six goals and he ranks second on the team with nine points through 13 contests. He has been playing alongside Brock Nelson recently, but still gains exposure to Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee on the top power-play unit.

Eric Staal (Buffalo) - C - Rostered in 15% of Yahoo leagues

Staal has three goals and five points in 10 games this season. He hasn’t gone more than two matches without picking up a point and Buffalo is set to be busy in the team’s return to action from COVID-19 protocols this week with four games on tap. Staal has been practicing between Taylor Hall and Sam Reinhart.

Joonas Donskoi (Colorado) - LW, RW - Rostered in 13ty% of Yahoo leagues

Donskoi has generated five goals and eight points in 11 games this season. His 41.7 shooting percentage is not sustainable, but he still has plenty of upside when the Avalanche return to action. Donskoi has been practicing alongside Nazem Kadri and Andre Burakovsky. He should also continue to see action on the second power-play unit.

Tyler Johnson (Tampa Bay) - C, RW - Rostered in 9% of Yahoo leagues

Johnson has had a sluggish start to the year, but he is poised for a larger role back in the middle with Anthony Cirelli week-to-week due to an upper-body injury. He scored a pair of goals on Saturday when the Lightning had Steven Stamkos out of the lineup as well. Johnson will likely be replaced by Stamkos on the top power-play unit if the Bolts captain returns this week. Still, Johnson has plenty of upside and the Lightning will be looking for him to step up.

Brett Pesce (Carolina) - D - Rostered in 6% of Yahoo leagues

Pesce has provided one goal and six assists in the last seven games. He has been one of the more productive blueliners in the league of late and should be rostered in more leagues at this time. Pesce has had issues with offensive consistency in the past, so he could just be a short-term option in deeper leagues. Still, he is worth scooping for as long as this hot play lasts. He has also been credited with 19 blocks in 11 appearances this season.

Alex Iafallo (Los Angeles) - LW - Rostered in 5% of Yahoo leagues

Iafallo has supplied three goals and six assists in 13 game this season. He continues to ride shotgun with Anze Kopitar on the first line of the Kings, while occupying a spot on the top power-play unit. Iafallo currently has one goal and three helpers during a three-game point streak. He has been credited with 10 shots on target during that span.

Andrew Mangiapane (Calgary) - LW, RW - Rostered in 5% of Yahoo leagues

Mangiapane has started to get going again following a slow start offensively to the year. He has accumulated four goals and two assists in the past seven games, which included a four-game point spree that came to an end on Saturday night. It has taken some time, but Mangiapane is beginning to resemble the player he was last year when he finished the regular season with nine goals and 17 points in 19 contests.

Jason Robertson (Dallas) - LW - Rostered in 1% of Yahoo leagues

Robertson got his first career goal a week ago and he’s been red hot ever since while contributing a four-game point streak. He has two markers and three assists over that stretch along with seven shots on goal. Robertson displayed plenty of promise last season when he generated 25 goals and 47 points in 60 AHL contests with Texas. His confidence is growing at the NHL level. He has been clicking alongside Roope Hintz and Denis Gurianov, which will make it difficult for the Stars to remove him from the lineup once Alexander Radulov is available to return. That will be a problem for another day, though, and he is worth taking at least a flier on at this time.
