Trying to get on the right side of the cut line

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Thousands of spectators greeted Tiger Woods with warm applause as he started the second round at 12.50 p.m.

They were 20 deep around the first tee and about 10 deep all the way down the left side of the fairway to the green some 400 yards away. There is no spectator access to the right side of the first fairway.

The starter, with an economy of words, introduced Woods with a minimum of fuss.

‘Please welcome to the tee, from Windemere, Florida, Tiger Woods,’ he said.

Wearing dark blue shirt and grey slacks, Woods tipped his cap and then striped his opening tee shot down the middle of the fairway. He flicked his approach shot to inside 10 feet and sank the birdie putt for a perfect start to get back to 1 over, which looks like being the cut number.
