Bad day for clubs, too, in Round 1 at Texas Open

Thumbnail

Thursday at the Valero Texas Open wasn’t just rough on the players; it was tough on their equipment, too.

Troy Merritt posted an image on Twitter of his 2-iron with a blown-out face.

His tee shot on the par-4 11th at TPC San Antonio traveled 155 yards, according to ShotLink, and he bogeyed the hole en route to a 2-over 74.

The head of Phil Mickelson’s 8-iron flew off at impact when he struck a fairway bunker shot on the par-4 12th. His ball barley reached the fairway and he made bogey.

Then there was Graeme McDowell. He withdrew after playing nine holes in 5 over, citing an ankle injury that originally occurred during Wednesday’s pro-am. Before he walked – or hobbled – off, there was this image of him putting with a wedge.

What happened to his putter? It probably wanted nothing to do with Round 1 in Texas, either.
