Palmer (67) ‘at peace’ inside the ropes

NORTON, Mass. – Ryan Palmer moved into early contention with a 3-under-par 68 Friday at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

He’s three shots off the lead in a bid to make another big jump in the FedEx Cup points standings.

Palmer continues to play through an emotional time. He tied for sixth at The Barclays on Sunday, a little more than a week after his father, Butch, died in a car accident in Texas. Palmer leaped 23 spots in the FedEx Cup standings, moving to 33rd this week. He needs to be among the top 70 to advance to the BMW Championship next week and then among the top 30 to advance to the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Palmer said he’s still struggling with the loss of his father, but he feels better inside the ropes.

“It gets better,” Palmer said. “I used to have those moments, obviously, kind of had one this morning when I got out here, but I’m going to have them for a while. I talked to mom the last few days, she’s great. I’m good. Trying to be around friends as much as possible.

“On the golf course, I’m able to control it. And inside the ropes keeps me calm, actually at peace.”
