G-Mac: ‘Temporarily dejected’ with 13-over showing

ARDMORE, Pa. – Graeme McDowell was on a short list of pre-tournament favorites this week at the U.S. Open. Many prognosticators figured his straight driving and scrambling ability were a perfect combination for Merion’s short, quirky layout.

Besides, McDowell has a victory and a second-place tie in this championship over the last four years and he hasn’t finished worse than 18th during that same span.

Merion didn’t care that McDowell seemingly has figured out this championship recently. The 2010 U.S. Open champion shot 76-77 for a 13-over-par total and recorded a whopping seven double bogeys over 36 holes. He easily missed the cut.

“I’m temporarily dejected,” McDowell said. “I’ll shake it off and I’ll get ready for the Open Championship in a few week’s time. That’s my next target.”

“I struggled the last couple days, but that’s golf and that’s the U.S. Open. And this golf course will do that to you, but it will be a short-term dejection, but we’ll soon check that off and get ready.”
