It’s been an unsatisfying summer for two of the LPGA’s biggest names.
Suzann Pettersen and Lorena Ochoa will be looking to fashion good endings when they play the CN Canadian Women’s Open this week.
Pettersen, No. 6 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking, rebounded from her disappointing 1-4 run at the Solheim Cup to get herself in contention at the Safeway Classic last weekend. But she ended up taking more hard lumps on the back nine on Sunday in Oregon. After taking a three-shot lead, she hit some wild shots trying to close. She followed a bogey at the 14th with a double bogey at the 15th on the Pumpkin Ridge Ghost Creek Course but still got into a playoff. She lost after hitting a wild tee shot at the second playoff hole. Rookie M.J. Hur proved the better closer on this Sunday.
Pettersen’s looking for her first LPGA title since winning five times in ’07. She did win twice last year in Europe.
But at least Pettersen’s getting in contention this summer.
Ochoa, No. 1 in the world, tied for 49th at the Safeway Classic. She hasn’t been a factor this summer with no finish better than a tie for 26th in her last four starts.
