With his mother and father in the gallery, Gary Nicklaus failed to advance to match play in the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills.
The 43-year-old Nicklaus shot rounds of 71-74 to finish in a tie for 82nd – two strokes above the cut line, and not enough to prolong his stay in Denver. The younger Nicklaus turned pro in 1992, played 96 career tournaments, and eventually gave up the game to join the family’s golf-course design business.
In 2007, he was reinstated as an amateur, and this year he advanced through a U.S. Amateur sectional qualifier in Wellington, Fla.
Alabama junior Bobby Wyatt earned medalist honors in stroke-play qualifying, finishing at 9-under 132. Match play begins Wednesday.
