PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – His Sergio spat notwithstanding, Tiger Woods had a rather uneventful third round at TPC Sawgrass.
After a birdie-bogey stretch on Nos. 2 and 3, Woods made 11 consecutive pars Saturday and sits two shots behind surprise leader David Lingmerth at the weather-delayed Players Championship.
When play resumes at 7:10 a.m. ET Sunday, Woods will have 140 yards left into the par-4 15th. The third round was suspended because of darkness.
“It was a day of patience, for sure,” he said afterward.
Woods struggled with the pace of the greens after a nearly two-hour delay because of inclement weather. He was on the seventh hole when play resumed, and he two-putted all but one green coming in.
“The greens slowed up just enough where those putts before the delay would have gone in if they would have had a little bit more pace to them,” Woods said. “I needed to make the adjustment, and I didn’t quite do it.”
The 2001 winner here, Woods will have 21 1/2 holes to catch Lingmerth, a 25-year-old first-year PGA Tour pro, who entered this week having missed eight of his last 10 cuts.
“I’ve done well in big events,” Woods said, “and I think that understanding how to play and how to manage my way around the golf course certainly helps.”
