The Diamondbacks announced on Tuesday that the club acquired pitcher Sam Lewis from the Royals in exchange for outfielder Peter O’Brien.
Lewis, 25, split the past season between rookie ball in Idaho Falls, Single-A Lexington, and High-A Wilmington. In aggregate, the right-hander posted a 1.62 ERA with a 39/7 K/BB ratio in 44 1/3 innings spanning three starts and 17 relief appearances.
O’Brien, 26, began his professional baseball career as a catcher but was shifted to third base, then the corner outfield and first base. At the major league level, O’Brien has been used almost exclusively in left field. He owns a .176/.228/.446 triple-slash line with six home runs and 12 RBI in 79 plate appearances. As the slash line might indicate, O’Brien offers power but not much else at the moment.
