Nationals starter Doug Fister has been diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow, MLB.com’s William Ladson reports. Fister went on the 15-day disabled list on Friday. It’s not known yet if Fister is expected back on his first day of eligibility, or if he’ll need more time to recuperate.
Fister carried a 2.87 ERA into his most recent start on Thursday, but he was shelled by the Padres, allowing seven runs in two innings. Despite the low ERA, though, Fister hadn’t been himself as he’s walking batters at a career-high rate, striking them out at a career-low rate, and inducing grounders at a career-low rate as well. Furthermore, all four of his pitches are registering career-lows in velocity.
