Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globereports that free agent right-hander Chien-Ming Wang is drawing interest from 15 teams, according to his agent Alan Nero. Wang, who turns 30 in March, was non-tendered by the Yankees last Saturday after posting a 9.64 ERA in ’09 and undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in June.
Nero wouldn’t reveal any of the interested teams, but Cafardo believes that the Red Sox are one of them and that the Yankees would like to match any offer. While many consider the Joe Torre and the Dodgers to be the odds-on favorite, last weekend I advocated Wang signing with the Cardinals, citing pitching coach Dave Duncan’s possible influence on the rehabbing right-hander.
Wang has been long-tossing since the beginning of the month and plans to visit Dr. James Andrews in January to get an updated outlook for his rehab. As of now, he’s not expected to contribute until May at the earliest.
