Padres and right-hander Joe Wieland avoid arbitration

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Padres and right-hander Joe Wieland have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $590,000 contract.

Wieland was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter as a Super Two player. The 24-year-old made it back to the majors this in September (and even notched his first major league win) after missing two years due to elbow issues. He had Tommy John surgery in July of 2012 and another procedure this past March to remove loose bodies from the elbow.

Despite Wieland’s tough luck on the health front, he still has youth on his side. He doesn’t project to have a rotation spot in 2015 right now, but he could be in the mix if the Padres deal a starter this offseason.
