The Phillies like to give out extra contract years

Tim Dierkes at MLB Trade Rumors noted earlier this afternoon that the Phillies’ decision to give Greg Dobbs a two-year deal before the 2009 season “wasn’t entirely necessary.” In light of his being designated for assignment today, I think Tim is right.

But Tim goes further in this post, noting all of the examples in which the Phillies have “freely given out extra contract years to many players when it did not appear necessary or prudent.”

It’s a pretty interesting and illuminating post, suggesting that the Phillies have limited their roster flexibility in significant ways over the past few years and will continue to be so constrained in the near future.
