Tigers suspend minor leaguer Warwick Saupold for the rest of the season

As reported on Tuesday, Tigers pitcher Warwick Saupold was involved -- along with two Pirates minor leaguers -- in a bar brawl this past Sunday morning. Saupold allegedly punched someone in the face outside of the Bronze Boar bar, which is across from the Toledo Mud Hens’ ballpark, and was arrested.

The Tigers have announced that Saupold has been suspended for the rest of the season, Matthew B. Mowery of The Oakland Press reports. It amounts to five games as the minor league season is soon ending.

The Tigers’ official statement:

Upon reviewing the details and accounts of an incident involving Warwick Saupold that took place last weekend in Toledo, the ballclub has issued Saupold a five-game suspension. The Detroit Tigers organization does not condone his actions and hold all personnel to a higher standard. Moving forward, the Tigers will have no further comment on this matter.

Similarly, the two Pirates’ players involved -- Gift Ngoepe and Dovydas Neverauskas -- were also suspended for the remainder of the season, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

Saupold, 26, appeared in six games at the big league level for the Tigers this season. He served up eight runs on 17 hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings. With Triple-A Toledo, he had a 2.30 ERA with a 50/22 K/BB ratio in 74 1/3 innings spanning 11 starts and seven relief appearances.
