Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke was given a lubricating injection last Thursday for his pitching elbow and had to be shut down for a couple of days, but it sounds like he is basically back on track.
According to MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick, Greinke threw a 24-pitch bullpen session Tuesday in Dodgers camp and reported no discomfort. He said he’s “maybe three or four days behind some people” but added that it’s “not a big deal” here in late February.
Greinke has used these lubricating injections in the past to help him through periods of dead arm. It’s a somewhat experimental procedure -- Joe Schwarz of SB Nation wrote a piece about it recently.
Greinke can opt out of his six-year, $146 million deal with the Dodgers after the 2015 season. He’d be leaving $77 million on the table, but the 31-year-old can probably feel confident about the move if he continues to pitch like an ace. Greinke boasts a 2.68 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 355 strikeouts in 380 innings so far with Los Angeles.
