BALTIMORE -- Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist has returned to the track for the first time since illness knocked him out of contention for the Belmont Stakes.
The colt jogged one lap around Pimlico on Thursday, his first time on the track since finishing third in the Preakness on May 21.
Nyquist had been limited to walking around the barn since a fever and elevated white blood cell count forced him out of an expected rematch with Preakness winner Exaggerator in the Belmont on June 11.
Jack Sisterson, assistant to trainer Doug O’Neill, says Nyquist was full of energy and is doing well. The 3-year-old colt will train on Friday before flying back to Southern California on Sunday to rejoin O’Neill’s barn at Santa Anita.
No plans have been announced for Nyquist’s next race. The colt won his first eight career races before losing as the favorite in the Preakness.
