After twice failing to gain admittance to LSU due to academic issues, wide receiver DeAngelo Benton has finally been approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse and will enroll at Auburn in time for summer school later this month, the Bastrop Daily Enterprise is reporting.According to the paper, Auburn assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor informed Bastrop high school officials of the development yesterday afternoon.Benton had signed with LSU in 2007, but failed to qualify academically. After spending a semester at Westgrave Military Academy, Benton thought he was close enough to qualifying academically that he withdrew from the prep school and moved to Baton Rouge, where he took correspondence courses to finish off his academy school work. That tack failed as the talented receiver was again ruled ineligible by the clearinghouse.LSU then pulled their scholarship offer shortly before the end of this year’s recruiting cycle -- after Benton had spent the previous few months getting his academic house in order -- and Auburn jumped in and offered Benton. If Benton can live up to his tremendous abilities on the field -- and stay eligible off of it -- it will be a huge recruiting coup for first year Tiger head coach Gene Chizik.
