Under his most recent contract, Bill Stewart had one year left at West Virginia before offensive coordinator/coach-in-waiting Dana Holgorsen took over the program.
Now, he’s out immediately.
A source close to the situation has confirmed to CFT through WVMetroNews.com that Stewart has resigned as head coach of the Mountaineers. Another source says Stew resigned for “conduct detrimental to the university”.
The Charleston Gazette and ESPN.com called Stewart’s resignation “imminent” a short while ago.
Stewart resigns in the middle of a highly publicized -- and embarrassing -- scandal that accused Stewart of being a force behind recent allegations that Holgorsen had several alcohol-induced incidents over the past few years.
WVU initially debunked the allegations, some of which to this day have yet to be confirmed by multiple media outlets and sources close to the situation, but later internally investigated the source of the accusations.
However, former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Colin Dunlap stated earlier this week on a radio show in Pittsburgh that Stewart asked if Dunlap would “dig up dirt” on Holgorsen.
Holgorsen’s attorney, Michael Benninger, met with WVU this morning to find out “where we are, how we got here and how we go forward together.”
Prior to that meeting, Stewart’s old attorney, David Hendrickson, said he was not included in any negotiation talks about Stewart’s future at West Virginia.
Stewart leaves a 28-12 record in three full seasons as head coach.
