Clemson suspends receiver for bowl game

With a rather significant ACC vs. SEC bowl matchup looming on the last day of the month, Clemson will be without a top deep threat in its passing game.

The Tigers announced late Tuesday that wide receiver Martavis Bryant has been suspended by head coach Dabo Swinney for the December 31 Chick-fil-A Bowl game against LSU. As opposed to the standard “violation of unspecified team rules,” the stated reason for the punitive measure was academics.

No statement from Swinney was attached to the release.

Bryant has averaged 30.5 yards on his 10 receptions in 2012; as Clemson noted, that’s tops in the nation for players with at least 10 catches.

The sophomore also has four touchdown receptions in 10 games, which is currently third on the team. And one more than 2011 All-American and fellow sophomore Sammy Watkins.
