Glimmer of hope, progress for James Rodgers, Beavers?

One of the biggest questions facing the Oregon State football program heading into summer camp early next month, aside from their starting quarterback fully recovering from surgery to his throwing hand/wrist, is the status of James Rodgers.

The do-a-little-bit-of-everything wide receiver suffered a season-ending knee injury last October, but his availability for the 2011 season has been very much uncertain throughout an offseason that’s seen at least one additional surgery after the initial one repaired torn ligaments. The last update on Rodgers’ recovery came in early June from head coach Mike Riley, who said he was “encouraged, although conservatively” about the progress Rodgers is making, noting that the receiver has been “on a treadmill, jogging, walking without a limp.”

During the six weeks or so since the last update, it appears Rodgers is progressing even further toward the goal of returning for the start of the season if not for a portion of camp.

In an mini-update posted to his Twitter account by way of The Oregonian, Rodgers seemed to indicate that he’s now doing a little bit of football-related work as part of the recovery process.

(Writer’s note: “bih” is Twitter shorthand for “female dog” for those curious and/or confused and/or frightened.)

While it remains to be seen whether Rodgers plays at all in 2011, the news that’s come out in the last month or two regarding the state of his rehab is certainly encouraging, which is something more than the player or the program had in the early portion of the offseason.
