A finalist for the 2015 Heisman, Christian McCaffrey has gotten a head start in collecting some additional well-earned hardware.
Wednesday morning, The Paul Hornung Award announced that the Stanford running back is the 2015 recipient of its annual honor. First given out in 2010, the Hornung honors the nation’s most versatile player, and McCaffrey certainly fits that description.
The sophomore is the only player in the country to lead his team in rushing and receiving. He also broke Barry Sanders’ 1988 record for single-season all-purpose yards with 3,496.
He was also the Cardinal’s top kick returner -- he returned one for a touchdown -- and he threw a pair of touchdowns for good measure.
“I am beyond blessed and humbled to be named the Paul Hornung Award winner,” said McCaffrey in a statement provided by the school. “To be mentioned in the same breath with the award’s previous winners and Mr. Hornung, one of most versatile players ever to play the sport, is incredible. This honor is a testament to all the efforts and support of my teammates, coaches, staff and the entire Stanford football program.”
McCaffrey was joined as a finalist for the 2015 Hornung Award by USC cornerback Adoree Jackson, Ole Miss defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche, Michigan safety Jabril Peppers.
