North Carolina received some good news on the eligibility front regarding one of their players under investigation by the NCAA. And they received some bad news regarding another. And some news that could be bad for a third.
According to a release issued by the school, junior defensive end Linwan Euwell has been cleared by the NCAA and will make his 2010 debut today against Virginia. Euwell had missed the first five games of the season due to the NCAA investigation.
On the bad side of the eligibility ledger, safety Brian Gupton will miss the remainder of the 2010 season and will have one year of eligibility remaining.
The third issue UNC addressed in this afternoon’s release dealt with starting cornerback Kendric Burney.
The senior was suspended for the first six games of the season for accepting impermissible benefits. That suspension was scheduled to end at the conclusion of today’s game, but still has an unresolved issue related to the ongoing review and his status for the Miami game is undetermined at this point.
“We were expecting Kendric’s issue to be resolved prior to the completion of his 6-game suspension,” said Dick Baddour, UNC Director of Athletics. “This week we learned that would not be the case.”
The resolutions for Euwell and Gupton leaves five Tar Heels players -- six if you count the new uncertainty surrounding Burney -- whose eligibility is still up in the air.
