Armed with another season of eligibility in his pocket, Chase Hounshell will use it to finish his collegiate playing career somewhere other than where it began.
In a “guess what I’m referring to” tweet sent out Tuesday, Hounshell heavily intimated that he had received a sixth season of eligibility from the NCAA. That additional year was a virtual slam-dunk for The Association as the tight end missed the entire 2013 season because of an injury and all but one game in 2012 because of a separate health issue.Going to college for six years isn’t just for doctors anymore.

Subsequent to that tweet, Hounshell confirmed to IrishSportDaily.com that he has been granted a release from his Notre Dame scholarship and will transfer to play his final season elsewhere. The South Bend Tribune writes that Hounshell will “be taking visits over the next couple of weeks to determine where he’ll take a grad school-style transfer.”
Hounshell was a defensive lineman for the first four seasons (11 games total) of his Irish career before moving to tight end prior to the 2015 season. Last year as a fifth-year senior, he caught one pass for six yards.
As a three-star member of the Irish’s 2011 recruiting class, Hounshell was rated as the No. 59 offensive tackle in the country.
