It took a little while, but Jordan Spieth finally got a few putts to drop at the AT&T Byron Nelson Championship.
Spieth made seven birdies en route to a 5-under 64 on the truncated, par-69 layout at TPC Four Seasons Resort. At 6 under, he was three shots behind Jon Curran when he finished his round, but many players in the afternoon wave had yet to hit the course because of a three-hour weather delay at the start of the round.
Spieth found 16 of 18 greens in regulation during what he termed a “flawless” opening-round 69, but he was only able to make two birdies. He had no such issues during the second round, closing with five birdies across his final eight holes including three in a row on Nos. 7-9 to end his day.
Spieth is making his fifth start in his hometown event, but his best prior finish came all the way back in 2010, when he finished T-16 as a 16-year-old amateur in his first PGA Tour start. Spieth finished second at each of the three previous Texas events this season, including a playoff loss at the Shell Houston Open and a runner-up finish last week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in nearby Fort Worth.
