R.A. Dickey won last night’s game with a heavy heart

R.A. Dickey

R.A. Dickey pitched the Blue Jays to victory over the Mets last night, working around a lot of walks, but getting the outs when he needed to and holding the Mets’ bats at bay.

It was an even stronger performance than you may realize. From Shi Davidi:

The Toronto Blue Jays will place R.A. Dickey on the bereavement list and recall infielder Munenori Kawasaki from triple-A Buffalo on Friday, industry sources told Sportsnet.

Dickey’s father died Tuesday night, but he still wanted to make his scheduled start Thursday, when he threw 7.1 innings of one-run ball in a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets.

How anyone can perform under such circumstances is beyond me. That R.A. Dickey did so and did so so well is a testament to his mental strength.
