Ed Davis won’t play Summer League for Grizzlies because he was asked to ‘by a coach who doesn’t have a job’

Go ahead and file this under comedy more than anything else, and be thankful that we have a medium like Twitter where athletes can jump in and publicly provide immediate feedback to any discussion involving them personally.

Ed Davis came to Memphis last season in the trade that sent Rudy Gay to Toronto, but had a hard time getting off the bench under then-head coach Lionel Hollins, especially in the postseason.

Since Hollins -- whose contract wasn’t renewed due to differences with the team’s new management -- wasn’t exactly all-in on Davis, it’s not surprising that Davis wouldn’t be all that interested in heeding his former coach’s advice.

It all started when Ronald Tillery, the Grizzlies beat writer for the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, hinted that Davis might be better off going to Summer League to further develop his game, even though it wasn’t required.

Then, Davis responded -- hilariously. Here was the exchange, via Memphisport.com.

For the Ed Davis-is-a-finished-product crowd, I recall OJ Mayo going to Vegas when he wasn’t required. It’s called trying to get better.

@CAGrizBlog I didn’t kno playing summer league was the only way to get better. But hey I guess you know the formula

@eddavis32 not only way. just 1 way. just don’t know why fans are so put off that you were asked to go even for a couple of games and bounce

Davis appears to have deleted his portion of the conversation from his feed, but you can see a retweet of the funniest one on Tillery’s feed here.
